What is Minwha?
Minhwa (민화), meaning “painting of the people,” is a traditional Korean folk art form known for its symbolism, bold colour and expressive style.
Originating during the Joseon Dynasty, Minhwa was created outside of royal courts — by everyday people, for everyday life. Its charm lies in its raw, unpolished finish.
These works were never purely decorative. Each image carried meaning — offering protection, inviting good fortune, every element was chosen with intention and symbolised a personal hope or desire.
Rooted in influences of shamanism, Buddhism, and anamist traditions,
Today, contemporary Minhwa continues to be practised and collected — both in Korea and internationally. Chrissy creates Minhwa pieces, drawing on this tradition of protective, transformational art. Working with her intuitive energy and personal symbolism.
Minhwa is a way to bring creativity, abundance, protection and transformation into the home. On the wall, on your alter, for your creative space… Something special for a kids room or a meaningful gift for a friend, these small prints work beautifully as a pair or a triptych…
